Schwarzbraun ist die Haselnuss and Ein Jäger aus Kurpfalz are two traditional marching (or drinking) songs - typical of what are called “Kneipenlieder.” A “Kneipe” is a small neighborhood bar where much local frivolity is to be had. As is typical of these, they are very short (too short for concert pieces), and tend to have a whole lot of verses. I liked the melodies, though, and thought that the best way to utilize them would be to use them both in the same piece. So I put them together in a traditional ABA format — the two melodies complement one another and it works very well.

As with all of these Octoberfest Dances (link), everyone gets major time with the melody, there are interesting countermelodies and challenging “end-of-phrase” licks — and it is very danceable.
