Niccolo Zingarelli wrote 37 mainly comic operas in all in a prolific career. Between 1785 and 1803 he wrote mainly for La Scala of Milan. Nearly all are forgotten, however, and he is known to us nowadays as the composer of Go Not Far From Me, O God, an often-used church anthem.

 

This transcription for brass quintet is a fine piece for a number of places in a traditional church service. It is also a great solo-and-ensemble contest piece for a younger group: easy parts, very accessible ranges in all parts, and showy changes in dynamics make this an exciting piece to play and listen to alike.
