Or Sus, Serviteurs du Seigneur
The melody of Or Sus, Serviteurs du Seigneur is known to us as that of the Protestant response nowadays usually used after the offering: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow.” This is not at all the text Sweelinck set to this ancient melody (Psalm 134 praises those who minister by night). But this is a wonderfully creative setting of this well-known melody.
Sweelinck (1582-1621) is an early composer in the Baroque style, and there is an unusual Renaissance hold-over to be found in measures 10-12 with some odd-sounding dotted-quarter-note triplets.
Or Sus, Serviteurs du Seigneur is scored for two Bb Trumpets, French Horn, and Euphonium (or Trombone)
Or Sus, Serviteurs du Seigneur sells for $15.00 for the hard copy and $10.00 for pdf’s.
