Rondo for Sweet Babu

 

Rondo for sweet Babu is a terrific contest piece for a soloist who is proud of their double and triple-tonguing. It is in rondo form; there are two highly contrasting middle sections (one legato, the other bombastic), and each repetition of the rondo theme is more difficult and more “showy” than the last. It’s a brilliant piece that’s sure to please performers, audience (and judges) alike.

 

I wrote this for myself when I was a college sophomore and had just changed majors from chemical engineering to music and had taken my first theory class. The piano part is not difficult.
